Build a communication network with paper cups and string
craft supplies
15-30 minutes
camp
In this activity, learners assemble cup phones and test them by sending messages to one another. The concept of a communication network is introduced as learners are challenged to collectively form a network where each participant contributes to its success. To test the effectiveness of this system, pairs stand apart with taut cup phone strings, designating one learner as the "receiver" and the other as the "transmitter." A secret message is whispered into the cup and transmitted down the line, emphasizing the transmission of information in the network. Optional extensions include sending messages of different lengths, or using cup of different materials. The activity includes prompts to facilitate a discussion about the effectiveness and challenges of their communication network.
